For the Record
The Thompson Tommies led at the end of each quarter in defeating the Night Hawks, 52-46, to take third place at the 2019 State Class B Girls Basketball Tournament. They shot just 30 percent from the floor but made seven 3-pointers to Hettinger-Scranton’s three, and 15 of 21 free-throw attempts to the Night Hawks’ five of six. Alyssa Andress topped the Night Hawks and all other scorers with 17 points and Samantha Oase added 14.
In their opening game of the tourney the Night Hawks downed previously undefeated Trenton 48-44 in overtime with Oase leading Hettinger-Scranton with 16 points, Andress added 11 and Abbie Kludt 10. They faced unseeded Rugby in the semi-finals and lost 42-35. Rugby had beat No. 1 Kidder County the night before. Leading the Night Hawks were Andress with 17 and Oase 14.
Injury wise the Night Hawks had some bad luck. Starter and senior Briana Sanford hurt her knee on the final practice prior to the team leaving for Grand Forks. She was unable to compete at the tourney. Key substitute Carolyn Schultz injured herself in the first game of the tourney and missed the other two games. Standout Abbie Kludt hurt her shooting hand and it affected her in the final game. But the Night Hawks have a solid returning group and should content for the Region 7 title next season.
Kindred won the championship with a come from behind win over Rugby. Kindred should be a strong contender the next three seasons with freshmen Abby Duchscherer, Terryn Johnson, Kristina Freier and 8th grader Kacie Burner leading the way.
