Eye on SW ND Sports

Rapid City’s Canyon Lake opened the seven team double-elimination Midwest Region Tournament with a bye and awaited the winner of the Minnesota/Nebraska game. Minnesota defeated Nebraska and then South Dakota. North Dakota (Fargo) defeated Kansas 8-0 in their first game and then lost to Iowa 3-0.

The state champions competing in the Midwest Region tournament are from Johnston, Iowa; Pittsburg, Kan.; Coon Rapids, Minn.; Webb City, Mo.; Kearney, Neb.; Fargo, N.D.; along with Canyon Lake.

The Lemmon/McIntosh Cowboys open their football season on August 23 versus Mott-Regent/New England at Lemmon. I noticed that the Cowboys are now in 9-man 9AA after being in 9A. I asked their coach, Josh Anderson, about the move up and he commented; “We used to be 9AA and then have been 9A for a few years. But this is our first year back at the 9AA level for awhile.” I looked at their schedule and they play two ND teams, one 9A team, one 9AA team and four 9B teams. They do things different in SD.

LOOKING BACK: Hettinger-Scranton’s (HS) JH football team remained undefeated as they disposed of Mott-Regent (MR) 34-6 on Oct. 6, 2014. Kyle Burwick opened the scoring for the young Nighthawks with a short touchdown (TD) pass from Jaxon Mellmer early in the 1st quarter. Mellmer hooked up with Ty Warbis on an 8 yard TD toss in the 2nd quarter and Jacob Dix added a 70 yard TD run. The first half ended with HS leading 20-0. Burwick scored again on a 50 yard TD run in the third quarter while MR also scored in the third for their lone TD of the game. The Dilse boys combined for the only 4th quarter TD as Warrick Dilse found Connor Dilse in the end zone for a 12 yard TD pass.

On the defensive side of the game I thought Mellmer, Burwick, Mack Buckmier, Carlos Martinez, Reece Williams and Ty Lachowitzer performed well. Burwick had a fumble recovery, Lachowitzer a quarterback sack and Zach Rickertson added an interception.

Sports schedule for the coming week is as follows:

– Aug 12, Football Practice Begins
– Aug 19, Volleyball Practice Begins

See you at the games.
