Labor Day weekend was fun in Buffalo. Rep. Sam Marty called me early Monday morning to see if I could drive him through the parade in Buffalo that day and, since I was going to go in for the parade anyway, I was more than happy to haul him around so he could throw candy at little kids… and some older folks.
I didn’t stay for the rodeo that afternoon because I had to get home to pick up Reub to go to the Glendo Gathering at Roger and Judy Nash’s that afternoon.
Lots of friends and neighbors came to the community gathering, so there were lots of folks to visit with and Judy, Roger, and Dale cooked a delicious supper for us. They used to have the Glendo Gathering in the Slim Buttes on Labor Day, but this weekend was archery season so Reva Gap was full of hunters, leaving no room for us. I took some of Mom’s old pictures along to see if some of them could tell us who they were of and gave some of them away to folks that could identify their relatives.
Cal, Ty and Jamie Thybo, Jace Jenson, Luke Rice, and Casey went to Doll’s Tuesday morning to help the Hackamore ship yearlings. Reub was busy haying at Glendo, so I took him lunch over there before I got the laundry done and all the gardens watered that afternoon.
I took lunch to Reub again on Wednesday while he was swathing at Glendo and Casey was busy hauling bales to the hay corrals. I weeded the flowerbeds and had to water the gardens again because it hadn’t rained yet and the temperatures were in the nineties.
I had to go to Spearfish on Thursday to get an MRI of my knee that is scheduled to be replaced the first week in October. There was so much road work on Highway 79 on the way down that I came home on Highway 85 to avoid waiting for the pilot cars. For some reason the road work on Highway 79 north of here and the work on Highway 20 by Reva that was supposed to be done this year has been postponed until next year. It would sure be nice if they would put some shoulders on Highway 79 to put a stop to all the wrecks caused by vehicles that drop a wheel off the shoulder and wind up upside down in the ditch. Of the six wrecks just this year, there was one fatality.
Dennis Nash hosted the Big Nasty Breakfast Fly-In this Saturday but the weather didn’t cooperate. It rained that morning and it was foggy enough that only two planes landed on his airstrip, Ernie Clark flew up from Spearfish and Vaughn Meyer flew up from Sorum. Lots of other pilots drove to the Fly-In So Judy Nash still fed a pile of folks a delicious breakfast of pancakes, sausage and scrambled eggs. Dennis said that it is really Judy’s fly-in, because when she’s done doing the cooking, he’s done too! Casey, Missy, Amanda and the little people, and RonE and Starla Jenson all went to Spearfish for the BH football game that afternoon, but Reub and I just stayed in the house out of the rain. It might be a while before they are able to get back in the hayfields.
Sunday School started at Slim Buttes Lutheran this Sunday and church time changed to the winter schedule with a potluck dinner following. And, as usual, we ate too much!
Have you seen the Trump bear that Jeff Jensen built out of hay bales in his pasture right next to Highway 79 just south of the Slim Buttes? Wow! I took pictures of it when I went to Spearfish the other day and shared it on Facebook. So far there are almost 200 likes on it. I also sent a copy to the SD Republican party and to Pres. Trump’s office. Thanks for doing that Jeff!
Dave Penn sent me this Trump joke a couple years ago:
A CNN reporter walks into a neighborhood tavern and is about to order a drink when he sees a guy at the end of the bar wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat. It didn’t take an Einstein to know the guy was a Donald Trump supporter.
The CNN guy shouts over to the bartender, loudly enough that everyone in the bar could hear, “Drinks for everyone in here, bartender, except for that Trump supporter.”
After the drinks were handed out the Trump guy gives the CNN guy a big smile, waves at him and says, in an equally loud voice, “Thank you!”
This infuriates the CNN reporter. So he once again loudly orders drinks for everyone except the guy wearing the Trump hat. As before, this doesn’t seem to bother the Trump guy. He just continues to smile and again yells, “Thank you!”
So the CNN guy again loudly orders drinks for everyone except the Trump guy. And again the Trump guy just smiles and yells back, “Thank you!”
At that point the aggravated CNN reporter asks the bartender, “What is the matter with that Trump supporter? I’ve ordered three rounds of drinks for everyone in the bar but him and all he does is smile and thank me. Is he nuts?”
“Nope,” replies the bartender. “He owns the place.”
